Peter Doig, Alpinist, 2019-22 – Did you know?

In common with many visitors to the current exhibition at The Courtauld Gallery in London, I was drawn to the monumental painting Alpinist (2019-22) by Peter Doig, the Edinburg-born contemporary artist. Did you know…

Peter Doig was always fascinated by winter landscapes and winter sports. For more than twenty years the artist has been including the image of a skier with crossed skis in his work. The artist’s interview published in the Peter Doig Exhibition Catalogue reveals that his inspiration came from a vintage souvenir tourist postcard of a skier from Chamonix that he had kept.

The artist initiated the creative process of this painting in Trinidad and completed it while in Zermatt.

We encourage you to visit the exhibition before it ends on 29 May.
